Get those pesky spots out between cleanings!

Get those pesky spots out between cleanings!

You've gotten your carpets cleaned and you're SO happy that they look good-as-new again! But as every homeowner knows, accidents happen. Here's how to get those spots out before your next cleaning!

You just had your carpets cleaned professionally for the summer. Your family is over and you're all standing around inside enjoying some BBQ when someone drops their plate all over your nice, clean carpet. Or worse, your dog gets scared by all the commotion and leaves you a nice wet spot. Well, in case you can't get the professionals back right away, what can you do?

Your first instinct might be to grab that bottle of generic or name-brand cleaner you got at the grocery store...you know, the one with all the chemicals in it. That should surely get the stain out, right? Stop right there! Those chemicals may give you the impression that they'll be "tough on stains" but the problem is that many of those chemicals will only mask the stain and set it in more permanently in the long run. What's worse, some of the really strong ones may even start damaging the fibers of your carpet!

Instead, use something made with natural ingredients. For most stains, using a bottle of our Zerorez Spot Remover as quickly as possible should do the trick. You only need a few drops to break down whatever was spilled. Then you can blot it up with a damp cloth. Just make sure you don't drench the spot; if you put too much of any solution on your carpet, then that residue will actually attract dirt and oil.

If your pet had an accident, then you may need to add a step. First, you'll want to make sure you soak up as much moisture as you can. Then, use a natural product to deal with the stain (make sure you do this first!). Once the stain is gone, you can try one of the store-bought products that mentions the word "enzymes." This will help break down the odor. Make sure you use the harsher cleaner last after you've dealt with the stain. Otherwise, it may likely set the stain in. Psstā€¦ we also offer pet treatments so if you don't want to worry about any lingering odors even though the spot is gone, give us a call!

If you don't have any cleaner available, try this DIY spot cleaner!

(As with any spot removers, always do a spot test)

What you'll need:

  • 1 Tablespoon BLUE Dawn dish soap
  • 1-2 Tablespoons baking soda
  • 2 Tablespoons 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Something to store your solution in

Instructions:

Step 1: Mix the Dawn dish soap with the peroxide in your chosen container.

Step 2: Add 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda, making a paste. Add more baking soda if too liquidy, or more peroxide if too thick.

How to apply:

Step 1: Pour a generous amount of liquid onto the stain. Using a toothbrush, rub your DIY spot cleaner into the stain.

Step 2: Let it sit for at least an hour (more for really tough stains), and then wash with water and dab with a rag. Don't use too much water! You don't want to soak your carpet, just use enough to rinse away your spot cleaner. Dried stains are harder to remove. Repeat the process until the stain is gone.
